Why minimum payments can cost more

Credit-card interest and required minimums vary by issuer. A monthly payment that barely exceeds accruing interest can leave the balance outstanding for a long time. This calculator shows how the approximate payoff period and interest expense change when you increase the payment.

Assumptions behind the estimate

We apply the entered APR as a fixed monthly rate, charge interest once per month and assume the same payment continues until the balance is zero. Real cards usually calculate interest using daily balances and may have variable rates or fees. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for your statement.

Strategies to test safely

Compare an affordable fixed payment with a slightly larger one and note the interest difference. If you cannot cover the interest being charged, the tool will flag the payment as insufficient rather than giving a misleading payoff date. Contact your issuer about hardship options where appropriate.

Common questions

Why does the calculator say my payment is too low?

Because the first month's interest would be at least as much as your payment, so the model cannot reach a zero balance with a constant payment.

Can I enter a zero percent promotional APR?

Yes. Remember the promo rate may expire and different terms may apply afterward.
