What percentage of the whole?
Divide the part by the total and multiply the result by 100. For example, 45 out of 180 equals 25 percent. Percentages are useful for understanding how a portion compares with the overall reference amount.
Common everyday uses
You can compare part of a household budget, a spending category, work completed or scores out of a total. Be careful to distinguish between percentage points and percentage change: they are not the same concept.
Why the denominator matters
A percentage makes sense only when the reference value is correctly chosen. Division by zero is undefined, and a negative or changing baseline can require a different interpretation than a simple share-of-total calculation.
